Sutil hoping to exploit home conditions at German Grand Prix

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Hockenheim (Germany), July 21 (PTI) All set to race on a circuit where he has won many races as a junior, Adrian Sutil is confident of exploiting the home conditions to continue his points spree for Force India at the German Grand Prix here on Sunday. "I''ve raced at Hockenheim a lot of times with many different cars: in Formula Ford, Formula BMW and now F1 and I''ve had some of my strongest races there. I had a few wins and always when I finished I was on the podium. "Now it will be a great feeling to go there with a really competitive F1 car and try to get the same success I achieved in my junior career," Sutil, who is one of the six German drivers along with legendary Michael Schumacher in the weekend Grand Prix, said. Sutil, who finished eighth at Silverstone after a stiff fight with Sebastian Vettel, is keen to erase the memories of his last race in the home country when he could not score points despite making Q3. "To get some points on my home ground - for the first time in F1 - would be a great feeling. Last year at the Nurburgring I started seventh but finished out of the points so I really want to try and finish the job now. We have a car that can do it and some small developments that should help," he said. The chairman and team principal Vijay Mallya said it''s time that the team shows their car''s real potential. "We have struggled a little in qualifying for various reasons, but we are improving and learning all the time and I hope that we''ll see a qualifying performance in Hockenheim that is more representative of the actual pace of the car. "If you look at what we presume to be the strengths and weaknesses of the car, Hockenheim is not as ideal as Spa or Monza. Having said that, it''s Adrian''s home race, and we are going to give it everything that we have," he said. "There are no dramatic updates, some tweaks to the rear wing and the rear suspension but I hope we''ll hold position relative to where we were in Silverstone. If we can get both cars in the top ten in qualifying that will set us up very well for the race and I hope get another double points finish," he added. Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi, who had a superb race at Silverstone by staving off strong competition from Fernando Alonso, also said that qualifying holds the key for their team. "We''ve really got to concentrate on getting into Q3 this race. We can easily get into Q2 but then we struggle a little to get the soft tyres to warm up. "Adrian''s had a similar issue in that on Saturday morning we are really confident after final practice, but in the afternoon it can go a bit wrong. If we can get the qualifying right - as we saw in Canada - then the race will come to us," he said.

Google to close down two sites in China

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Beijing, July 21 (ANI): Google plans to close down two of its Chinese websites, a self-developed website ranking page and a lifestyle site, because of a lack of demand for them.According to the China Daily, Google will also discontinue technical support for two services for local partner Tianya.cn this week.Tianya.cn utilizes Google's technologies to power some of its website functions."We have always been trying to develop new products and services for our users. Some enjoyed great success while others failed," the paper quoted Google's online statement, as saying."In China, the website ranking page and lifestyle site were not welcomed by our users, that's why we decided to shut them down," it added.Industry watchers say the search giant's decision makes financial sense."It's reasonable for Google to shrink its services as the two (services) didn't contribute much to its bottom line," yet they ate up manpower and capital," Li Zhi, an analyst with domestic research firm Analysys International, said. The reshuffle at the US search engine has come just 10 days after it won the Chinese government's approval to continue running its Chinese website.Zhang Feng, director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's Telecoms Development Department, said that Google signed an agreement promising to "obey Chinese law" and will avoid linking to material deemed a threat to national security or social stability, which ultimately showed them the green light from to renew its Internet license.During its dispute with Chinese government authorities, Google's search-engine market share dropped to 30.9 percent in the first quarter from 35.6 percent three months earlier. Oakland set to become `Silicon Valley of Pot`

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Washington, July 21 (ANI): Oakland could soon become the "Silicon Valley of Pot" after its City Council approved an ordinance that permits industrial marijuana production. It is being seen as a path-breaking decision that could spur the commercialization of a crop largely grown in hidden gardens. The 5-2 vote came after two hours of testy debate between pot growers, who argued the proposal could destroy their livelihoods and businessmen who said it could turn Oakland into the Silicon Valley of pot, create jobs and generate new tax revenues. The audience booed, hissed and talked back, causing City Council President Jane Brunner to repeatedly admonish the crowd. The plan would authorize four potentially enormous pot factories, but makes no provision for the hundreds of growers who now supply Oakland's four dispensaries, which sold 28 million dollars in marijuana last year. The council, however, promised it would develop a plan for these growers before permits are awarded next year for the four large-scale marijuana operations."This is a monumental step forward," said Dale Gieringer, an Oakland resident and the longtime head of California NORML, which backs the legalization of marijuana. He added: "It really means moving into the era of industrial-scale operations and Oakland means to do it big." Kashmir issue root cause of terrorism in South Asia: Lodhi

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

London, July 21 (ANI): A former Pakistani diplomat has described the decades old Kashmir issue as the root cause of terrorism in South Asia, adding that the recent violent protests in the Valley has exposed India's failure.Speaking at an event organised by the Commonwealth Journalists Association (UK) at the House of Commons here, Pakistan's former envoy to Britain and the US, Maleeha Lodhi said that it was important to deal with the root cause of the Kashmir issue.Holding New Delhi responsible for the breakdown of last week's talks between Indian External Affairs S M Krishna with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi in Islamabad, Lodhi said India should look beyond its own paradigm. She said that the attitude of India towards Pakistan was similar to the one that is adopted by Israel towards Palestine, where the mighty power always tries to arm-twist and dictate its own terms for dialogue."You cannot hold Pakistan hostage to your own demands and seek a favourable outcome," Lodhi said while referring to India's firm stand 26/11 terror attacks probe issue.Lodhi also highlighted the three possible scenarios for the near term: a prolonged diplomatic deadlock with fruitless talks continuing but with realisation of the actual issues; a scenario of managed tensions where differences continue but are managed through diplomatic means; and the third being the most desirable scenario where both countries adopt a problem-solving approach to find a resolution of their disputes, The News reports.Countering Lodhi's remarks over the Kashmir violence, noted Indian journalist M J Akbar said that the recent protests in the region were not because of any hatred against the country, as it was being presented."The Kashmiri youth are eager to join India in security services, they want to be a part of the entertainment industry and it was imperative they were accommodated," Akbar said. The whale was about the same size as the boat," the Telegraph quoted Werner as saying."We'd spotted it about 100 metres away and thought that was the end of it. Then suddenly it was right up beside us."I assumed it would go underneath the boat but instead it sprang out of the sea. We were very lucky to get through it, as the sheer weight of the thing was huge."There were bits of skin and blubber left behind, and the mast was wrecked. Burger King ad banned for overstating burger size

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Sydney, July 21 (ANI): An ad for a burger has been banned after Britons complained that a chicken takeaway was far smaller than the one shown in an advertisement. The Burger King television ad for the Tendercrisp chicken burger featured a man eating a large burger in a motel room before an angry looking cow was shown standing in the doorway, with a voice-over saying: "So good, you'll cheat on beef".Two viewers said the ad was misleading because they believed the product sold in Burger King stores was significantly smaller than the one shown in the ad.Defending the campaign, Burger King said it needed to clearly show all of a product's ingredients in its advertising.Britain's Advertising Standards Authority said it bought three Tendercrisp chicken burgers and found that the thickness of the burgers, the quantity of additional fillings and the overall height of the product was "considerably less" than appeared in the ad."We also examined the size of the burgers in the hands of an average-sized man and considered that they did not fill the hands to the same extent as the burger featured in the ad," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted it as saying."We concluded that the visuals in the ad were likely to mislead viewers as to the size and composition of the product," it added. It ruled that the ad should not appear again in its current form. No attack on Rail ministry: Chidambaram``s office

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, July 21 (PTI) Home Minister P Chidambaram''s office today clarified that his remarks on the Sainthia railway accident were not not a criticism of the Railway ministry. A statement issued by his office said one of the television channels was "mischievously" reporting the minister''s statement as a criticism of the Railway ministry. Some Left parties also seem to have deliberately misinterpreted the statement, it said adding "this statement is being issued to clarify the matter". The statement referred to Chidambaram''s speech at a meeting of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) here this morning in which he had referred to the time taken to despatch relief teams for rescue and relief operations following Monday''s train accident. Referring to the time taken by two of these teams to reach the accident site, the Minister said ways must be found to respond more quickly in case of a disaster. In that context, he suggested that NDMA should examine whether it can use helicopters and small aircraft.

Ruckus after woman delivers stillborn in hospital lobby

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Chandigarh, July 21 (PTI) Chaotic scenes were witnessed at a government hospital here this afternoon after the family of a woman, who gave birth to a stillborn, accused the doctors of not attending to her immediately. Chottu, the woman''s husband, alleged that the baby had died due to negligence by doctors at the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital. The family even raised slogans against the hospital and demanded action. Chottu, a daily wager, said he had brought his wife Bulbul to the hospital after she had labour pains. He alleged that instead of attending to his wife, the staff asked him to first get a patient card made. As there was a long queue, Bulbul''s condition deteriorated while waiting in the lobby and she delivered the baby there itself. Ruling out any negligence on part of the hospital, Head of Gynaecology Department Dr Veenu said "the patient or her attendant had not told the doctor on duty that it was an emergency case and that the woman had gone into labour." In an emergency case, the patient is attended to immediately while the attendants are asked to make the patient card in due course, she added. She claimed the woman delivered a stillborn baby.

Groundwater levels drop by 2.9 metres in three regions of AP

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Hyderabad, July 21 (PTI) Groundwater levels have depleted considerably in three regions of Andhra Pradesh with the latest figure indicating a drop by 2.9 metres as against 2.5 metres recorded on an average between May 2008-10. According to Ground Water department officials, the three regions -- Telangana, Rayalseema and coastal areas -- have seen a continuous decline in groundwater levels with deficient rainfall and large-scale exploitation of groundwater for farming cited as the main cause for the depletion. Between November 2009 and June this year (pre-monsoon), the average fall of water-levels stood at 2.9 mtrs with the same going down by 3.84 mtrs in Telangana region; Rayalseema recording a fall of 3.58 mtrs while the Coastal region had a drop of 1.42 metres, a senior department official told PTI. Besides, an analysis of average depth of water-levels in the state from the year 2000 to 2010 (pre-monsoon period) also indicated that there is a fall of 2.18 mtrs from 2000 to 2005, followed by a rise of 4.89 mtrs upto 2008. But, the present trend in average depth indicated a fall of 2.5 mtrs in the state from May 2008-May 2010. As many 3,449 villages of 26,000 in the state have been notified as over-exploited under the Andhra Pradesh Water, Land and Trees Act (WALTA), while out of 1,229 groundwater micro-watersheds 132 are classified as over-exploited, 89 as critical and 175 as semi-critical, the official said. The state has witnessed an uneven rainfall pattern with deficient rainfall of 25 per cent during June 2009-May 2010. "There is decrease in recharge to groundwater mainly due to less rainfall which has resulted in more dependence on groundwater and that is how depreciation in groundwater levels is happening," he explained. However, some areas have received good rainfall and a rise in water table is observed, though it is premature to say whether the decline in last year can be made up this year. The entire Rayalseema region has witnessed long-term depletion of groundwater since 1990 and about eight lakh dug-wells have almost dried up, though they work only seasonally, another official said. All districts in Rayalseema and some in Telangana besides Prakasam district and up-line areas in coastal Andhra Pradesh have been identified as depletion-prone areas. Groundwater usage is increasing with irrigation sector accounting for 85 per cent of its extraction while industries and drinking water adding for the remaining 15 per cent in the state, the official said. "District water management agencies have taken up water conservation through watershed basis and construction of check dams, farm ponds have helped to stabilise further fall in groundwater table in the past decade by over 50 per cent," he added.

Regulator must adhere to law for recognising B.Ed colleges: SC

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) The Supreme Court today asked the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) not to grant recognition to private colleges offering B.Ed courses if they failed to fulfil the mandatory requirements under the law. "In future no colleges should be granted recognition without fulfilling the mandatory conditions in accordance with the NCTE Act, 1993," a bench comprising Justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly said. The NCTE is a regulator body for teacher education system in the country. The court, which was hearing the issue related to the derecognition of some colleges offering B.Ed course in Madhya Pradesh, asked the Member Secretary, NCTE, to file an affidavit regarding the compliance of the Act of NCTE and the regulation framed subsequently. The court also directed the counsel for Madhya Pradesh to place before it entire list of private and affiliated colleges of seven universities in the state offering the B.Ed course from the academic session 2005-06 to 2008-09. It said that in this regard, the counsel will have to consult the Secretary, Higher Education of the State, who in turn will get in touch with the Vice Chancellors of the universities. Further, the counsel for Barkatullah University, Bhopal, will also furnish the list of colleges affiliated to it for offering the B.Ed course. The bench said the counsel for colleges will file written submissions and make available documents relating to affiliation within three days. The apex court was anguished that some colleges were allegedly offering B.Ed courses in Madhya Pradesh in breach of the NCTE Act. The bench was hearing the appeals filed by the colleges and students against the decision of the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelling the recognition of some of the colleges. The colleges are seeking directions to seven universities in the state to declare the results of students who were provisionally admitted by them during the academic year 2007-08.

Now, Facebook face-off in court

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Facebook will try to get a New York man's claim for majority ownership of the website thrown out of court, attorneys for the social networking site said Tuesday.A complaint by Paul Ceglia of Wellsville, New York, claims that a 7-year-old contract he signed with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for software development entitles him to 84 percent of the company."No one's ever said it's not his signature or it's a fake contract," Ceglia attorney Terrence Connors said during a federal court hearing in Buffalo.Connors said the two men met when Zuckerberg, then a Harvard University freshman, responded to an ad Ceglia had posted on Craigslist looking for someone to develop software for a street-mapping database he was creating.Zuckerberg offered to take on Ceglia's project for $1,000, Connors said, and then told Ceglia about a project of his own, a kind of online yearbook for Harvard students that he wanted to expand.Ceglia said he gave Zuckerberg another $1,000 to continue work on Zuckerberg's "The Face Book," with the condition that Ceglia would own a 50 percent interest in the software and business if it expanded. The percentage grew to 84 percent based on a clause that added a percentage point for each day the project went past its Jan. 1, 2004, due date.Zuckerberg's undertaking "at that time was a fledgling project," Connors said. "Who knew it would turn into what it has turned into today."Facebook recently celebrated its 500 millionth user, Connors said. At the center of Ceglia's claim is a two-page "work for hire" contract bearing the names of both men.Facebook attorney Lisa Simpson acknowledged on Tuesday that Zuckerberg and Ceglia had worked together on the street-mapping website but said the contract submitted by Ceglia was full of "inconsistencies, undefined terms and things that don't make sense.""We have serious questions about the authenticity of this contract," Simpson told U.S. District Judge Richard Arcara. "What the contract asserts is there is a relationship about Facebook and there isn't one."Ceglia's complaint was filed in state Supreme Court in Allegany County on June 30 and transferred to federal court at Facebook's request.Ceglia was the subject of a temporary restraining order issued by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo in December 2009, after Cuomo said a wood-pellet fuel company operated by Ceglia and his wife took more than $200,000 from consumers and failed to deliver the pellets or refunds. The case is pending.A telephone listing for Allegany Pellets was not in service Tuesday. In 2008, Palo Alto, California-based Facebook settled a lawsuit over its origins brought by three of Zuckerberg's former Harvard classmates, who claimed he turned their idea into Facebook after they hired him to work on a website that later became ConnectU.

"We still need to add some more areas. We plan to add Punjab in the north and Gujarat in the west as a part of next year''s road shows in India," JTB''s India representative Ashish Sharma told PTI here. Here`s how to make products seem less expensive to consumers

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Washington, July 20 (ANI): A formula to make the price of a product seem less expensive to consumers may finally have been found. Marketers can help customers form more accurate perceptions of prices by helping them create a "discriminating" mindset, according to researchers.Consumers tend to perceive products as more expensive when they are grouped with expensive item - and less expensive when grouped with inexpensive ones, according to Marcus Cunha, Jr. and Jeffrey D. Shulman (both University of Washington, Seattle).Writing in the Journal of Consumer Research, the authors say: "In three experiments, we examine how perceptions of a price depend on other prices in the set and on whether consumers want to discriminate items or make a general inference about the prices in a product category."Advertisements or displays that elicit a "generalization mindset" can lead consumers to perceive a product price to be closely related to other products in the vicinity."The opposite price perceptions will occur if a marketer's action encourages consumers to think about the uniqueness of a product in the set," the authors explain. In this case, when the consumer is being discriminating, a given price will be perceived as less expensive if it is viewed in the presence of other high-priced projects and more expensive when viewed in the context of less-expensive products. As an example, the authors propose a strategy for an in-store display for a new MP3 player that emphasizes how the player is different from its competitors."Our research shows that this puts consumers in a discrimination mindset," the authors explain. "As a consequence, when examining prices, consumers will focus on the relative differences of the prices leading to a lower-price perception for this MP3 player when it is in a set with more expensive players but to a higher-price perception when it is in a set with less-expensive players."Marketers should note the way these situational factors affect consumers' judgments, the authors conclude. Success elude Merchant and Chandra in Six-Red World Snooker

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

New Delhi, July 21 (PTI) Veteran Yasin Merchant and Manan Chandra will return empty handed from Sangsom Six-Red World Snooker Championship as both of them have failed to win a single match at the event in Bangkok. Merchant has lost three and Chandra four out of the five preliminary stage matches. Even if they win their remaining matches, they cannot qualify for the pre-quarterfinal stage. Merchant, who was drubbed 5-0 by Australia''s Glen Wilkinson on the opening day, suffered twin defeats last night which put him out of contention. Chandra also lost of both his matches in Group D last night, taking the tally of defeats to four out of four. Chandra had earlier lost to Wales'' Andrew Pagett 5-2 and Thailand''s Rachapol Pu-Ob-Orm 5-4 on the first day. Playing in Group ''C'', Merchant failed to showcase his cue control and masterly dipping of the multicolored for which he is famous for and went down to Thailand''s Thepchaiya Un-Nooh (1-5) 22-41 01-36 20-32 00-41 43-03 09-37. Bespectacled Merchant struggled against Thai from the vey onset of the match who offered very little opportunities. Thepchaiya carved out two superb breaks of 41 en route to a resounding victory. In his second match, things didn''t get better for the Indian as English strong-man Mark Selby outclassed him with an identical 5-1 frameline. Selby kept Merchant under pressure with lovely safety positional play and with touch of softness dipped the colored ball in different pockets much to the liking of the audience. Merchant lost 14-29 31-34 08-48 42-00 00-69 00-59. Last three frames witnessed better brand of potting and positional play from Selby. In Group ''D'', Chandra once again failed to lift his game at the crucial junctures and lost both his matches after a brief fight. Chandra''s early strides were ended in a blaze of glory by England''s Nigel Bond in the first encounter who defeated him 5-1. The 2006 IBSF world championship semi-finalist Chandra failed to peak at the right time and lost 60-01 08-55 06-52 00-77 00-61 11-46. In the last match of the day, Chandra, however, showed nerves of steal in a highly pressure situation when he turned the table on Englishman Gerard Greene, winning the first three frames. But Greene, in a dramatic turn around, grabbed the fourth and then last four frames to cause upset. Chandra went down 38-00 61-00 58-00 25-34 34-31 00-39 00-42 20-45 34-36.

France`s Ribery faces uncertain months over sex case

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

French soccer star Franck Ribery faces month of uncertainty, threatening his mental stability, after being placed under judicial investigation on suspicion of soliciting sex with an under-age prostitute, his lawyer said on Wednesday. The Bayern Munich winger, along with international team mate Karim Benzema, who was also placed under investigation, will now have to wait for police to unravel a prostitution ring centred around a night club in Paris's Champs Elysees district. This is the first stage of criminal proceedings that can lead to charges. The offence carries a maximum three-year jail term and a 45,000-euro ($58,000) fine, but a conviction hinges on proving the accused knew the girl was under 18."I would say this unfavourable treatment is liable to ruin his concentration and attack the mental balance of a guy who for two months has already been extremely destabilised by this case," Sophie Bottai told Europe 1 radio.Police had postponed the hearing until after the World Cup, in which Ribery was part of the disastrous French campaign which led to a public outcry after players protested against the coach and the team crashed out without winning a game.Bottai said her client was "dismayed" about the magistrate's decision. The girl at the centre of the probe had told Ribery she was 20, the lawyer said. She was just 17 at the time.According to French law, paid sex with someone under 18 is deemed sex with a minor. The lawyer said she would apply after the summer recess to have the case dismissed."The investigation has been going on for two months (and) confirms even more he could not have known her age," she said. The scandal took a twist when the young woman, Zahia Dehar, gave an interview in April, implicating players and denying being a prostitute. She said Ribery, married with two children, had invited her to Munich in April 2009 to celebrate his 26th birthday, adding that he had paid her for three encounters last year.CLUB, COUNTRY FUTURE UNCERTAINRibery was the most popular player before the World Cup fiasco, in which 'Les Bleus' were eliminated in the first round without winning a match. He was branded as one of the ringleaders in a revolt by players who boycotted a training session before their final game. The playmaker extended his Bayern Munich contract until 2015 before the tournament with German media reporting his annual salary would be around 10 million euros ($12.5 million). This week his club manager said he expected to see the player return to the highest level after an injury-ravaged year.France's Health and Sports Minister Roselyne Bachelot and junior sports minister Rama Yade have previously said that any player under judicial investigation should not represent France."It's not a good example of a man to give to France's youth," junior minister Fadala Amara said.New coach Laurent Blanc, nicknamed "The President" in his playing days, has been given the mission to restore the team's pride and has made clear discipline will be key.The first sign will come when he names his first squad for France's friendly against Norway in Oslo on Aug. 11.(Additional reporting by Paul Taylor and Thierry Leveque; Editing by Jon Hemming)(For more news on Reuters India, click http://in.reuters.com)

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Wellington, Jul 21 (ANI): New Zealand opener Jesse Ryder has been ruled out of the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka as he is still recovering from an elbow injury.Ryder injured the ligaments in his elbow prior to the ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean."Due to the compressed nature of the tour and his speed of recovery so far we feel we have insufficient time to get Jesse fully fit and able to take part in any of the one-day matches," coach and selector Mark Greatbatch said."Therefore we have made the decision to keep Jesse in New Zealand where he will continue his rehabilitation from the elbow injury and return to playing as soon as possible," The Dominion Post quoted Greatbatch, as saying. The 14-man New Zealand cricket squad leaves for Darwin on Friday for a training camp.Ryder's absence in Sri Lanka further weakens the Ross Taylor-led New Zealand who are already without regular skipper Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum, each on paternity leave. Morgan can become Test star, predicts Boycott

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

London, Jul 21 (ANI): Former England opener Geoff Boycott has predicted that unorthodox batsman Eoin Morgan has the game in place to become a Test star.Boycott, who built his own reputation as one of the world's toughest batsmen, has re-released his classic book "Play Cricket The Right Way" a cartoon-style instruction manual on the basics of the game.Morgan, who made his name in one-day and Twenty20 cricket, can stake his claims for an Ashes berth this winter in the upcoming Test series against Pakistan.Boycott said fans should not write him off in the longest form of the game because of his switch-hits and reverse-paddle shots in limited overs cricket, The Sun reports."The guys that have good technique can play all forms of the game. People say Eoin Morgan is unorthodox, but he's not. Yes, he can open the face and nudge the ball into gaps," Boycott said."On top of that, because the game has moved on with Twenty20, he has inventive shots. His basic grounding though is very straight, his footwork is good. The fundamentals of his game are there," he added. (ANI)

Women`s hockey coach M.K. Kaushik to be investigated for harassment

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

The coach of the Indian women's hockey team, M.K. Kaushik, has pulled out of the squad after a player accused him and some of his staff of sexually harassing her, officials from the sport's federation said on Wednesday.Kaushik's departure could deal a blow to the team's prospects ahead of next month's hockey World Cup in Argentina, as he was seen as instrumental to raising the team's performance.Officials of the Hockey India (HI) federation told reporters that Kaushik, a former Olympian and team captain, has offered to "withdraw" from the team until his name was cleared.Kaushik, speaking to the Press Trust of India news agency, said the accusations were a "big-time conspiracy against me.""I will prove my innocence," he said.HI will launch an investigation into the accusations, naming a panel on Thursday, federation secretary Narinder Batra said."Hopefully the panel will give its recommendations before next month's World Cup so that we can either get a new coach or reinstate Kaushik if he is found innocent," Batra said. The federation, however, said it had suspended a team support staff after receiving evidence that he had been involved with prostitutes.HI President Vidya Stokes told reporters that an assistant coach will take charge of the team for the Asian Champions Trophy in Busan, South Korea, this month.Kaushik, a member of India's 1980 Moscow Olympic gold medal winning men's hockey team, met HI officials on Wednesday, but details were not immediately available.(Editing by Krittivas Mukherjee)(For more news on Reuters India, click http://in.reuters.com)

700 die as China reels under worst floods in decade

News posted by www.newsinfoline.com

Beijing, July 21 (IANS) Floods triggered by torrential rains have claimed the lives of 701 people and left 347 missing in China, the government said Wednesday.About 18 million people in 27 provinces and municipalities had been relocated since the flooding started in April, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters and the Ministry of Civil Affairs said.Over seven million hectares of farmland were affected and 645,000 houses were destroyed in the worst floods in a decade. Direct economic losses estimated at about 142 billion yuan (about $20 billion), Xinhua reported. The water levels of more than 230 rivers had been above the danger mark since April. Some areas along the Yangtze river suffered worst flooding in 30 years.Liu Ning, secretary-general of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said at a press conference that the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze river had been crucial in controlling the floods. The flow on the river's upper reaches topped 70,000 cubic metres a second Tuesday -- 20,000 cubic metres more than the flow during the 1998 floods that killed 4,150 people and the highest level since the dam was completed last year.'The sluice gates have kept the water levels of the dam at 154 metres, enabling the dam to block four billion cubic metres of water and preventing severe flooding in the lower reaches,' Liu added. The reservoir has a capacity of 22.15 billion cubic metres for flood control, as water levels could rise to as high as 175 metres, he said.Flood waters had breached six small reservoirs this year, but timely evacuations prevented any casualties, he said.Liu also urged authorities to remain alert as the flood season was far from over, and the six to eight typhoons expected to land later this year would bring more rain and worsen the situation.About 287,000 military personnel had been mobilized for anti-flood operations.
