Pondy Govt moves HC over approval for medical college

Puducherry, July 21 (PTI) Puducherry Government has moved Madras High Court seeking a directive to the Medical Council of India (MCI) to sanction approval to a medical college at Kadirkamam near here. The petition has been filed by Puducherry Medical College Society, constituted by the government, for setting up the medical college, officials said today. The MCI in its recent notification released through its website rejected approval for the government college to admit students during this academic year. "It is unfortunate that the Council had denied approval, but we have taken legal course to start the college," Home and Health Minister E Valsaraj said here. It was "unfortunate" that the MCI had turned down the approval on "flimsy and insignificant grounds", he said. The government was striving hard to ensure that the college, first of its kind in the state sector, with 150 seats in first year MBBS course, starts functioning from this year itself, the minister said. There were only "minor and flimsy deficiencies which have been cited as reasons for the denial of approval by the MCI for the college", he said, adding steps were already initiated to plug the deficiencies.
